Art At Home for Week of April 6

This weeks theme is imaginary creatures.  Each week there will be a theme that includes a lesson for Kindergarten and First Grade, Second and Third Grade, and Fourth and Fifth grade.
Don't worry if you don't have all the exact supplies, do what you can, have fun, and if you'd like, email me a photo of your artwork for our online Center Art Gallery!

Missing you all!

Hand Tracing Creatures

For Grades K and 1:

You can trace your hand and use that shape to make an imaginary creature!
1. Find some paper or cardboard and something to draw with.
2. Choose a hand position (see below for ideas) and trace your hand slowly,
holding the pencil straight up and down.
3. Now add details to create an imaginary creature.
You could draw: eyes, horns, scales, a tail, a snout, fur, wings, antennae,
whatever you can think of.
4. Use your pencil to add patterns and designs to make your animal even
more interesting. If you have crayons or markers, add color.

Here are some hand positions you could make and then trace to begin your creature.
Try a few and see which which shape inspires your most interesting creature.

Googly-Eye Creatures

For Grades 2 and 3

1. Glue two googly eyes onto white paper (you can also use pom poms, stones,
beads, gems, or whatever you have). These are the eyes of a fantasy creature!

2. Draw a head around the eyes; it can be any shape, round, oval, or maybe free-form.

3. Make the body large enough so that your creature touches two edges of the paper.

4. Add details such as scales, fur, horns, spikes, claws, wings, whatever you like!

5. Add patterns such as stripes, polka dots, waves or zig-zags.
If you have crayons or markers, add color.

6. Where does your creature live? Finish by drawing a simple background
such as a sun, grass, rocks, water.

ZANY ZOO CREATURES

For Grades 4 and 5

1. Think about all types of animals.  Maybe even go online or look at a book to get
lots of ideas.  Think about ocean animals, flying animals, jungle animals, pets, etc...
2. Find a pencil or something to draw with, and a piece of paper or something to
draw on.
3. Create an animal drawing of an imaginary, never-before- seen creature using
parts of 5 different  animals. For example: You might use the wings of a fly,
the neck of a giraffe, the tail of an alligator, the beak of a toucan, and the strips
of a zebra.   Add color if you have markers, crayons or colored pencils.

4. Can you think of a name for your creature?  Try to create a name that
includes parts of all the names of the animals you used… like “Flyrafcanzigator”
5. If you have time, invent another new animal and name it too.  Have fun!
