Abstract Prints by Grade 4

The painting Mountains and Sea by Helen Frankenthaler was our inspiration for this project.  Students "stained" their paper with tissue paper before printing their abstract design.

  1. I really like how these projects turned out! Would you be able to share the link to a how to? I would like to do this project with my classes this year and I am curious how you did the printing part. Thanks again, I've enjoyed your blog and found it really helpful.

    1. Hi Sariah,
I don't have a link to a how-to, since this project kind of came about organically. Students first wet their paper with water and added tissue paper squares, then brushed on more water. The next week the tissue paper flaked off and "stained" paper was left. I use foam printing paper for printmaking, so students drew an abstract drawing onto their foam, and pressed in with pencil to create their printing plate. The last class, they rolled on their ink and pressed their print onto the stained paper, so it created an overlapping effect. Hope this is clear enough, let me know if you have more questions!
