Line Turtles by Grade 1

First graders started this lesson by searching the art room for all kinds of lines.  We then took turns drawing all types of lines on the whiteboard.  They drew a turtle and filled it's shell with all kinds of lines: loopy, curvy, straight, even letters, numbers and shapes.

Optical Illusion Hands by Grade 4

Fourth graders used both line and value to create this illusion of 3D hands.  They practiced using value (darks and lights of a color) by creating a value scale, before embarking on their final product.

Dinosaurs by First Grade

First graders learned how to draw dinosaurs using simple shapes.  They colored using warm and cool colors, and finished by adding a decorated frame.

Landscapes by Kindergarten

Kindergartners designed landscapes that included hills, mountains, skies and more.  They colored using vibrant oil pastels, and finished by adding a frame decorated with patterns.

Optical Illusion Drawings by Grade 5

Fifth graders explored lines and value in order to create the 3D effect in these line drawings.

Clay Castles by Grade 4

Fourth graders sculpted these textured castles out of ceramic clay.  They attached windows, drawbridges, towers and more.  Watercolor paints were used to add color, and personalized flags were added as a final touch.

Warm and Cool Owls by Grade 1

First graders rolled, folded and stamped their clay to create those owl sculptures.  They chose either warm or cool colors to paint their owls.  

Laurel Burch Cats By Grade 3

These colorful felines are inspired by the fantastic artwork of artist, Laurel Burch.  Third graders covered their cat drawings with patterns, and then used regular markers as well as color-changing markers to fill the patterns with color.

Texture Mirrors by Grade 2

Second graders used a variety of tools to stamp different textures into their clay.  Once the clay frame was dry, we glued paper mirrors to the back, painted with watercolor and embellished with colorful beads.

Tissue Box Monsters by Kindergarten

Kindergartners used cutting and glueing  skills to create these scary monsters.  They were inspired by reading Ed Emberley's great book, Go Away Big Green Monster!
